5 Reasons To Get Rid Of That Stump In Your Yard

Posted on: 12 July 2017

Whether you've just purchased a property with a stump in the yard or have recently had a tree removed and are left with the stump, you may be wondering if you should have the stump removed. There are no good reasons for leaving a stump in a yard and garden area and plenty of reasons to remove them. Following are five of them.

Stumps Are Unattractive

Some people try to dress up stumps by placing a planter on top of them and filling them with flowers and plants. However, no matter how you try to dress it up, a stump is a stump, even if it's got flowers sitting on top of it and in winter, you won't even have the flowers. There is no way to make a stump attractive, and you'll be able to find a much better place for the planter.

Stumps Are Unsafe

Stumps provide attractive climbing places for children, but because they're rarely structurally sound, stumps are dangerous to climb on. The wood is generally brittle or otherwise weak, creating a significant risk of falls. It's also easy to get a splinter in the skin while climbing or playing on a stump. Even if you don't have children of your own, you should have the stump taken out -- neighborhood kids are often drawn to yards with stumps.

Stumps Harbor Insects

Stumps provide perfect environments for ants, termites, and a variety of other insects. Although some species of ants are more of a nuisance than anything else, home infestations are not pleasant, and they may cost you money if you have to throw away food. Carpenter ants can cause substantial structural damage to your home, and termites another significant threat. Another possible insect issue involved with having stumps in your yard is mosquitos. Stumps usually have indentations on the top that get filled by rainwater, and this creates a prime breeding ground for mosquitos and biting gnats.

Stumps May Cause New Tree Growth

Spouts may form around the stump, which means that they'll have to be removed -- and because they'll keep growing back as long as the roots remain in the soil, this could end up costing you quite a bit of money in landscape maintenance bills. This new growth also makes even the most meticulously keep yard look unkempt and sloppy.

Stumps Take Up Valuable Space

Imagine a picnic table, a birdbath, or even a thriving new tree in place of that old stump, and you'll see even more benefits to having it removed. Stumps take up yard space that could be put to a variety of much better purposes.
